Math makes it happen in criminal investigations

Real world situations are the perfect way to show students the value of the math they have to take to earn degrees in engineering and science. For example, solving crimes with math is not just for prime time. Math makes it happen in real life. University of Minnesota students used statistics, geometry, and mathematical computing to help Virginia detectives narrow the field of suspects in an unsolved crime. The Office of Outreach and Diversity outreach helps children explore science and engineering

The Office of Outreach and Diversity recently hosted 60 girls from the Minneapolis Afrocentric Charter School, Harvest Prep Academy. The event was in honor of Black History Month and National Engineers Week.

Because women are underrepresented in the engineering and science fields, this type of outreach may be essential for young girls to realize their potential. Although there are not a lot of women in it today, women have been there since the very beginning. Grace Hopper was a computer science pioneer, and this month Frances E. Allen became the first woman to be awarded the Turing Award for her contributions to the field. More...

High Tech Girl’s Society hosted by the Office of Outreach and Diversity to encourage girls to consider high tech careers

Thirty young women with the High Tech Girl's Society recently visited the Institute of Technology to learn about topics like programming a robot dog, the flow of gases on the surface of the sun, and tracking eye movement to improve Web sites. The HTGS hopes to introduce young women to careers in science and engineering and show them potential outcomes of an education in technology or science. More...
