Join us in Santa Fe

We are delighted to present the first University of Minnesota Institute of Technology field trip, September 18–21, 2008, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Join other Institute of Technology alumni and guests for an insider’s tour of historic Spanish and Indian sites of Santa Fe and northern New Mexico—be entertained, educated, wined, and dined. See the preliminary itinerary and frequently asked questions for details.

The field trip will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, September 18 with a cocktail reception in the Terraza Room of the historic hotel, La Fonda on the Plaza, where a block of rooms has been reserved for the Institute of Technology group. Please make your hotel reservation directly with the La Fonda on the Plaza (see registration form).

New Mexico MapSome of the sites we plan to visit are:

  • Palace of the Governors (built in 1609) and historic buildings around the Plaza;
  • World renowned International Folk Art Museum, the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture, and the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art—all on Museum Hill;
  • San Ildefonse Pueblo and the atomic city of Los Alamos;
  • Authentic Spanish villages in the Sangre de Cristo mountains;
  • Pecos, a historic pueblo Indian and Spanish Colonial trading center, near the site of the Civil War battle of Glorieta;
  • A reception at the private home of one of our Minnesota alumni.

Meals are planned for Rancho de Chimayo, a restaurant in an old Spanish village in the mountains; the International Folk Art Museum on Museum Hill; La Casa Sena near the Plaza; the Fenn Art Gallery; and Greer Garson’s Forked Lightning Ranch, overlooking the Pecos River. Also, on Monday we are offering an optional fly fishing trip on the beautiful Pecos River (additional fee).

The trip fee of only $600 includes most meals, local transportation, and events detailed in the attached itinerary, as well as passes to museums on the Plaza and Museum Hill. Air fare and hotel costs are not included. Please contact Dick Schmeal (ChemE, Ph.D., ’65) at 713-529-3216 or e-mail at rschmeal@ix.netcom.com, if you have questions or wish to offer suggestions for additional side trips. Return the attached registration form to the address indicated. Don’t wait too long—there is limited space in some restaurants and certain venues.

We request that you return the registration form no later than July 15. Early registrations are encouraged. To secure your space before the deadline, send a $300 per person deposit. The registration (and remaining balance due) deadline is July 15.

Come see the history and beauty of Santa Fe. We are looking forward to seeing you there.
