Students and the IT Mentor Program

Student responsibilities

  • Contact the mentor within 3 days of receiving his or her professional profile, which will be e-mailed to you. Students are expected to initiate and maintain contact with mentors.
  • Maintain regular contact with your mentor (at least twice a month) and respond in a timely manner.
  • Spend approximately 2-4 hours per month building a relationship with your mentor.
  • Identify realistic goals. Discuss your needs, define goals, assess progress, and celebrate accomplishments.
  • Attend scheduled events, including the mentor program orientation in October and thank-you event in April.
  • Inform your mentor about your course schedule, exam schedule, and other priorities.
  • Maintain and model professional behavior. Ask your mentor to define professional behavior.
  • Communicate problems to program director. Notify staff if there is a change in your ability to participate in the program.
  • Represent the Institute of Technology and the University of Minnesota.

Minimum requirements for students

  • Be an enrolled IT student: sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate student.
  • Have a demonstrated interest in your own professional development.
  • Agree to time commitment: approximately two hours per month, October through April.
