About IT

The Institute of Technology (IT)—created in 1935 by bringing together the University’s programs in engineering, mining, architecture, and chemistry—has become one of the premier colleges of its kind in the nation.

Today, IT comprises 12 departments and 24 research centers that encompass engineering, the physical sciences, and mathematics. Our academic programs are consistently ranked among the best in the nation.

From the University’s earliest years, IT departments and programs played a prominent role in its transformation from preparatory school to one of the country’s leading public universities. As science and technology reconfigure our world, IT is working to ensure that Minnesota will be in the vanguard of emerging technologies and groundbreaking scientific research.

Our educational mission undergirds everything we do. IT’s motto—“Inventing Tomorrow”—is embodied in our faculty, students, and alumni. They are the visionaries who will develop new technologies, establish new businesses, and educate the next generation of leaders.

Welcome to the future—the University of Minnesota Institute of Technology.
